Lawn fertilizer calculator worksheet
Use this worksheet to calculate how much fertilizer product to apply from lawn size, target nitrogen rate, and the nitrogen percentage on the bag.
Formula
Use the nitrogen percentage from the fertilizer bag as a decimal.
Product needed = (target nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft / nitrogen decimal) x (lawn square feet / 1,000)
Example: 0.75 lb nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft using a 24-0-6 fertilizer on 4,000 sq ft:
(0.75 / 0.24) x (4,000 / 1,000) = 12.5 lb product

Sanity checks before spreading
- Confirm the product is labeled for lawns and your grass type.
- Calibrate the spreader or use the label setting as a starting point.
- Sweep granules off sidewalks, driveways, and streets.
- Water in only if the label calls for it.
- Do not apply to frozen ground, saturated soil, or before heavy rain.
- Keep people and pets off the lawn until label directions allow reentry.
